BARRHEAD’S train station is set to reopen next week following a month-long closure to electrify the line.

It comes after ScotRail’s managing director, Alex Hynes, revealed images showing the progress that has been made during the works, while he confirmed the route will reopen on Friday, August 4.

Engineers have been working around the clock to deliver the key upgrades to prepare the line for electrification.

East Renfrewshire News:

The route has been shut since Saturday, June 24.

The works cost £63.3million and included activity at four stations – Kennishead, Priesthill and Darnley, Nitshill, and Barrhead.

Rail workers installed overhead power cables that are needed to introduce electric services on the line.

Additionally, work has also been carried out to remove the footbridge at Nitshill station and replace it with a new, longer ramp, which will introduce step-free access to Platform 2.

Alex Hynes said: “It was great to visit the Glasgow to Barrhead electrification project.

East Renfrewshire News:

“Good progress being made on the ground. Services resume for customers on August 4 and modern electric trains from December.”
